OUR GROWTH AREAS

Our 4 main growth areas are all are required to deliver change.

How we connect the power of devolution with delivery, growth and opportunity is what the Northern Growth Group - In Parliament is all about.

1

Connectivity and Transport

All parts of the North need to be better connected.

Years of underfunding in essential transport infrastructure has left the North’s people and places disconnected and disadvantaged. If we can’t connect to the education, employment, training and skills needed to deliver greener, faster, infrastructure and transport, then the talent pipeline and labour market fails. The North fails.

Planned investment and the Government’s commitment to NPR and LMR are welcome - but the crisis in connectivity and capacity in the North needs to be tackled now if economic growth and productivity is to follow.

2

Homes, Communities and Places

Plans to build 1.5 million homes and retrofit existing homes require the skills and innovation to do so.

Housing - and place based regeneration - is at the heart of all Mayoral local growth plans. The need to develop, design and build better, healthier and greener places and communities where people want to live, work, rest and play is essential to growth across the North.

We need investment, training, skills, and jobs to deliver quality homes which are affordable, connected and improve health and wellbeing.

3

Clean Power

The North has huge natural resilience and resources.

The Government’s Clean Growth Plans are ambitious, but to climate change, and reach Net Zero targets, we need the investment, innovation, skills and jobs to deliver and adapt our homes, places, journeys and supply.

How we unlock the North’s clean power potential is critical to delivering sustainable growth. Decarbonisation requires investment in innovation and skills to deliver greener energy, homes and transport. Maximising the North’s clean power potential will be transformative in accelerating clean energy, security of supply and delivering economic growth.

4

Culture and Creativity

The North has huge untapped cultural capital.

The cultural and visitor economy has great potential but too often the cultural investment, infrastructure and opportunities are not based in the North. The cultural economy needs talent - young people working in creative industries, arts and communities need to be trained and retained in the North.

The North has a good story to tell but cultural capital needs to be unlocked. We need to attract and connect visitors across the North and maximise potential and growth.
